Waking from the DreamState

Post by -Lacie- »

Ok, so I am a programmer, and I realize how difficult it can be to create, apply, test and execute changes in any program. I do have one suggestion however...

Since it usually takes me like... up to or over a MINUTE to log off, why don't we change the word "seconds" to "minutes" in the log off message. You know the one, it says...

"You spend a few SECONDS to focus your consciousness....." usually followed by ... "You sharpen your focus and are totally unable to leave the DreamState, no matter how many times you try"?

So it won't necessarily means a change in code... just an edit of ONE word?

We now return you to your regularily scheduled programming.

Excellent question!

Sometimes, I have to log off 6 to 8 times before I'm able to get back in m'Black Box...ermm log off. I have logs! I don't touch the keyboard, or even breathe sometimes, and I'm not on the ocean or in space either, so I don't think that's a factor. The Earth IS spinning... mebbe that's the problem?

It should take 5 seconds to log off. The sharpen your focus message should only appear if you're moving your character or pressing a key. If you're getting that message when you're not touching the keyboard/mouse, there's something going wrong.

There is a pause of five seconds between the moment you click exit to when the client closes. Any action taken during this time will cancel the process. For instance, if press any key on your keyboard.

If it is indeed taking you an exorbitant amount of time to log off, beyond what I already described, may I suggest you stop playing Underlight on a commadore 64.

Looka here, buddy.... you leave my INIAC alone! I had a Babbage machine, and I upgraded! I even bought a younger hamster to run the treadmill for it! I have my harddrive overclocked to run Win98 and I even went as far as Vista!

Beat me, torture me or whatever, but I will NEVER, EVER go to Win10!

I go to visit my other laptop at the old-computer's home every other Saturday. I made the fatal mistake of TRYING Win8 and that poor thing is still on life support!

HAHHAHHAHAH!

Windows 8 was terrible, Windows 10 I really really enjoy, though.

but anyway, stupid question, have you actually rebooted recently? I've picked up a nasty habit of just closing the cover on my laptop and letting it sleep when I'm done using it, and basically it'll run for weeks like that without ever getting an actual restart. I've found that after a while this does impact UL's login and logout times, though not so much the way it runs inbetween.

As for the "you gather your thoughts and pull yourself back into the dreamstate" message, that's from keyboard or mouse input, it's possible your mouse is naturally jittery and that could be causing it?

The Babbage machine uses punchcards, ok? (Translation, I'm on an old Dell laptop that I bought new 8 years ago, an Inspiron).

I use the "sleep" function, and I reboot about every two days. And I'm on top of a stable surface and the mouse is up to date, no "roller" and on a pad. So nay, it doesn't flutter around loosely.

As for Win10.... it might be groovey on a computer built in this decade, but my hamster can't handle it! He'd go pop!

Just got a refurbished Dell Latitude E6400 (circa 2009?ish) with Win10.

Works great :)

Are any of your keys sticky? (No, get your minds out of the gutter, people)

In particular a key you might not notice, like Shift or Alt or Num/Scroll Lock. That might still trigger it. Otherwise, seriously - I have no idea. The timer is pretty straightforward so if you're the only one experiencing this issue I'm thinking it's something peculiar about your setup?

No.... I don't think there's any sticky keys... wait, here's a pic:

The Black Box

I mean... it's top-notch, I wouldn't trade it for the world!

And it's soooo much better than my last one...

Old Box
