Nature's Resurgence

Post by Elmer »

He woke up with a start! He didn't know if it was the sulfurous stench in the air he smelled or the loud rumblings he heard that did it. He also didn't know where he was
or how he got to be there or even -when- it was.
When he stood up he felt surprised at how easy it was, that his joints and bones weren't aching, he rubbed his eyes and face with open palms, and as he lowered his hands he noticed the skin on them was no longer wrinkled, slack or blue veined. For long moments he marveled at this youthful regeneration as he felt his face, ran his fingers through his hair and he even peeked inside of his trousers with what can only be described as complete and utter astonished disbelief.

Coming to his senses he surveyed his surroundings and realized he was standing behind a desiccated stub of a tree trunk, looking ahead he saw that the land was devoid of anything green, or anything at all, except for the source of the stench and the rumbling. The ground before him was steaming and charred, and up ahead moving away from him was a lumbering mechanical monstrosity. As it moved slowly along, it churned out with various clinking and tinkling sounds an enormous swath as far as the eye could see, of something that glittered. As whatever it was it covered the land, it burned hot, removing..melting..burning.. anything in it's path, leaving only the smoldering stench.

He stood for a long time and just watched as the mechanism disappeared over the horizon and the sound faded to a dull hum.

The silence was deafening.

Not a bird, not a rustling leaf, not a rushing stream. He took a few steps forward, the crunching on the ravaged land made him feel sick to his stomach. After walking for a few minutes he noticed remnants of the substance that the mechanism had been spewing. He knelt down to investigate and pried something out of the charred earth. He held it in his hand and stared dumbly.

It was a coin.

As he slowly looked at the ground surrounding him he saw them...millions ... billions .. an infinite number of melted and charred bits of silver and gold coins and smoldering bits of paper currency.

He mumbled under his breath...."holy shit....what have they done...?"

He hadn't remembered falling asleep again, but he must have. He saw a few familiar faces, he didn't recognize them right away but with only a moment or two of focus he was able to. Their presence was warm and inviting.

As he looked at his bleak surroundings and continued along the desiccated ground, he actually wondered if the other place was the real and -this- was a dream, for this was surely a nightmare beyond any he could ever imagine. Whichever was which.. he longed for the green, fresh and light of nature, it's sounds and smells. He had to force himself to hope and have faith that some remained somewhere.

He walked on along the scorched land, looking for signs of life.

As he continued to plod across the barren landscape, he thought of many things, mostly he thought of how meaningless possessions were, and how important simple and free things were..like water, as he licked his parched and cracked lips, and the shade from a tree, as sweat soaked his clothes.

He also thought about what had happened, not only here, with the land, but to his appearance. Time seems to have gone in reverse, yet..he recalled a recent dream, and the folks there said a hundred or more years had passed, now this was beyond confusing, as many of the dreamers were the same as he remembered, I suppose he still dreamt of them because he had programmed his mind to dream of the same people who were familiar and mostly kind. He had not seen them all yet, he thought of a couple who he was missing and longing to see, though he had heard that some no longer had dreams. Some had aged a little, but not much. When he dreamt, he didn't say much, mostly he listened, he supposed when he had something important to say he would say it.

But there was something else..

In his dream, somebody asked him if he had come through the Time Portal. He didn't know what that was, but maybe he did, who knows? Could it somehow be connected to his .. rejuvination?, and if time has gone in reverse here, and forward when he dreamt what did that -mean-??, and did he SLEEP through all the destruction around him?? How could that even be possible, even though he was narcoleptic, he was not THAT deep of a sleeper. He wondered over and over what was going on and if he had, in fact, finally gone completely mad.

He continued on, thinking of many things.

He couldn't walk anymore, off to his left he saw a large mound of rock and rubble which might pass for shade, he made his way to it and sat heavily to the ground. Leaning back against the rock he licked his parched lips, his mouth feeling somewhat like he had been eating sand, but of course he hadn't been eating anything, or drinking anything, and his strength was waning.

He closed his eyes in silent prayer while at the same time wondering if there was anyone else alive and wandering as he was. Just then he heard a loud sort of chattering noise, it startled him but was a welcome break from the silence of many days. As the noise continued on rather insistently, he knew exactly what it was, as he had heard this many times before, but how was it possible that he was hearing it now??

He got to his hands and knees and crawled around the large rock formation, following the sound. He stopped at a large crevice in the rock and peered in just as the chattering squirrel leapt out at him. He fell back in surprise, but he was also delighted. The squirrel started bounding away as squirrels do and the man heard himself shouting "WAAAIT"..

The squirrel paused, sat on it's haunches and looked back at the man, it's tail twitching, then turned and continued on, though this time, it stopped every few feet and turned to look, as if it was waiting for the man to catch up.

The man got up and began to follow, he realized he was smiling and talking to himself and the squirrel..but this was not a new thing for The Whisperer, he often communicated with the wildlife of the world. "Where do you live? you must have food and water, or you'd not be living at all..you want me to follow?, yes?.." He smiled and plodded off with a new found strength as the squirrel bounded off in front of him, stopping every so often, because of course a squirrel knew there was no WAY a man could keep up with him if he REALLY wanted to move. The squirrel chittered and chattered a happy sound as if it were laughing, or saying...Hurry UP...one of those.

In his dream as he plodded around working in the Library and re-visiting the Museum, he heard laughter in the air, which was kinda nice, but then the laughter turned into ear piercing screams, which obviously was quite concerning.

He followed his senses up to the Order of the Sable Moon, where he met Heaven Alexis, Zoric and Kenna Rain for the first time. Miss Alexis was surrounded in shadow, she seemed to take comfort from it, it brought back fond memories of his time at the Monastery and those whom he had loved there.

Miss Alexis said that the voice he had heard was coming for her, she made reference to a Golden Knight, he thought he remembered reading about that recently.

They sensed a light behind the portal out on the Trinities, and when Miss Alexis drew close, they were all thrown back forcefully. Trouble was coming this evening.

Though he was not able to stay and help, the Whisperer felt something stirring in his soul, he knew what it was, WHO it was.. he told Miss Alexis that he would leave her something in his stead that would hopefully be of some help. With calm focus and concentration, he was able to conjure forth his old friend, the deer, the majestic Stag. Inside...he felt like doing a happy dance, but at the present moment, he'd only look like an imbecile if he did that, so he kept calm.

It seemed so long ago that he had lost his old friend, but he was not lost at all, he was just..different now, made of Shadow and glimmering insight, more majestic than he ever was..His Stag would help protect those who were in need of it, as long as they had belief and faith that it could.

He was suspended there, in the ether, neither dreaming or awake. It seemed weightless, like floating in a warm pond. Fading in and out of worlds of dreams and dreams of worlds. In brief moments of coherence he tried to focus on only the best of times in all the worlds.
