The OOC of battle training

Post by Voxaroth »

Combat in this game is an art, and kudos to those who are good at it. I've gained all the in-game knowledge I can on the subject, and have reached the point where, to get fundamentally better, I need information that I just can't ask for in the game. For example:

How do you bind your keyboard?
Where do you keep your hands?
How do you steer/strafe?
How do you organize your inventory and how do you execute moves quickly using your keyboard/mouse?
What other intangible things does a normal player not know about?

I'd bet there are many people who would very much appreciate a tutorial on these things. It's for the good of everyone!

Its going to be different for everyone. But let me lay down my keystrokes for ya - been the same for ages.

Standard arrow keys with my right hand -

Left hand:
A - is jump
S and D are sidestep left/right
I use the left hand Ctrl Button to USE item or Fire if controlling a DM/PM
Just above the ASD I use Q for my flame.
For WishBringer the F is firestorm - followed by G for Razorwind.
1,2,3,4 - Restore, FA, RF, Pro
More or less like that - a few other short cut keys for various other uses.

This is my way, I'm sure there are many ways folks would consider better, but once your used to whatever way is your way, all others will seem awkward. I'm just used to it.

The biggest thing I can say is how you set up your pack too.

Designate two keys for Select Previous and Select Next. I have a whole row for all of this such as:

A - Items (View Inventory)
S - Who (View Neighbors)
D - Arts (View Arts)
F - Select Next
G - Select Previous

This allows you to go up and down in all the tabs. Like for your inventory I put chakram, dreamsoul, chakram, dreamsoul...i keep a set of alts near my best chaks, resilience, and a shield. I keep the alts close because of abjure and how it sucks having your own arts abjured off lol.

Select Next and Select Previous rocks because as long as you are on that tab, you don't even need to use the mouse to open anything and you can move up and down with just a button!

Whatever's comfortable for you. I've been playing pc games since there were pc games, so I grew up on things like Wolf and Doom. I'm perfectly comfortable still using my arrow keys and ctrl to fire.

Strafe is on the < > and I actually keep my Who window open when I fight, not my items. I have my 0 and 1 on the numpad set to Who and Items so I can switch to use elemens, but I go back to Who so I know who else shows up. Like Ghaz coming out of nowhere =P

Then Shift and / are bound to items up and down so I can switch to dreamsoul, use it, and go back to chaks.

I also have all of my arts bound to keys that make sense for me, if not all close by, but my hands know exactly where to go. Abjure is on A, restore is on R, etc.

As Dina said, organize your pack chak ele chak ele and somewhere in the middle of that, FA alt. I tend to actually have to use the mouse for reapplying arts because I'm constantly losing them due to reflect.

Use something comfortable for your hands though, mine easily handle a doom setup, others may not.

If you have a gaming mouse, assign all arts that you need to click the who list to apply to a button on the mouse. Restore, FA, abjure ect. You need your hand on the mouse anyway and gaming mice offer a host of options.

Strafe with left hand, turn with right, set buttons within easy reach to things like activate hate, jump ect. I find the mouse is easier to find and use items and you can still strafe with left hand.

you fight with the mouse in hand?

I only use the mouse for other games like WoW. Never used it for UL......

Would be nice if you could do that though. Holding down both left and right buttons on the mouse to move.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

I settled on:
NUMBERPAD
Numpad 0: Use
Numpad 4: Turn Left
Numpad 5: Move Backward
Numpad 6: Turn Right
Numpad 7: Nearby Players
Numpad 8: Move Forward
Numpad .: Flamesear
Numpad +: Switch to Item List

KEYBOARD
W: Previous Item
A: Strafe Left
S: Next Item
D: Strafe Right
Q: Restore
E: Poison (it will be good someday! maybe! god I hope....)
F: Trigger Switch
G: Push
1: Abjure
2: Scroll List Up
3: Scroll List Down
4: Trap Nightmare
5: Purify
6: Antidote
Alt: Use
Space: Jump

Seems to be working pretty good so far, I'm getting used to the controls. I tried using the mouse to steer, but because it only turns you when in the image window (not in the lists windows or chat box), it just kept being too unreliable for me. Spent more time paying attention to where my cursor was than what was happening.

Strafe = sidestep, correct?

it means the same thing to me but in the game strafe is more like a toggle you have to hold down in order to sidestep, the sidesteps are ordered in sidestepLeft and sidestepRight this is the best of my knowledge correct me if im wrong. :lol:

My keyboard layout is the only thing that gives me any advantage in fighting. It is the bomb-diggity. :)

Dina - I can't actually find "Select Next" in the list, only "Select Previous" and "Show Previous" and "Show Next". Where are you seeing it?

It's not near select previous for some reason, it's at the other end.

Still can't see it. Maybe it's a bug. What's it next to, in your list?

I'm going to jump in on this existing thread for some battle feedback.

I'm trying to better understand what's going on. I'm not sure if I'm just missing the hit box, if attacks are landing and i'm just not getting feedback, if the mare is out of sync (due to it bouncing around) or if I just suck.

Below is a video of me fighting a Bogrom, and it taking almost 4 minutes to blade it down. If you guys have any input, feedback or suggestions which might improve my results, I'd love to hear them.

I am not sure the level of your SoulReaper, but let's say it's sub 10. That means your blade does 1-4 damage. A bogrkk had 50 DreamSoul. It is also regenerating while you're fighting it, so missed hits are hurting you. It's going to take a while with such a weak blade.

I've never liked the back and forth style of fighting lesser mares. Find someone to teach you how to circle blade, it's faster.

Dream on.

Greetings and Salutations everyone. This is Xyn Rhade weighing in on the Battle topic.

As a mediocre fighter, I have found that circle blading the Mares is the easiest way to defeat them, that is for Agoknight and below.

My Keyboard layout is pretty simple, and has aided me well:

Q=Look Up
W=Look Down
R=Reset Eye Level
A=Previous
S=Next
Z=Sidestep Left
X=Sidestep Right
SHIFT=Jump
C=Use
F=Focal Blade
V=Flame
SPACEBAR=Trigger Switches
ARROW KEYS=Move

The rest should be Player preference, but I think the above works best for most Players in combat.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

It seems my underlying problem was that I was employing hunting techniques I learned in 1998 :lol:

I changed my approach with help from the feedback here, and dropped my kill time on a Bogrom from 3m30s to 45s.

Greats tips!
