Looking for old friends

I was Farlong in Shades of Truth. Does anyone remember me?

I remember now what I liked when I first started playing SoT, and what ruined the game for me. When I first started playing, I got caught up right away in a captivating story with another character, and for some time after that there were always people who had room for my character in their stories. That's what made it fun for me. Then there came a time when none of the other characters could spare more than a minute or two with Farlong, before dashing off to fight a mare, hang around in some in-game chat room with other friends of theirs, stand in line for a teacher, or stand around watching a grand rp production. The rp at those events was very thin or non-existent, and it completely broke the spell for me. All the fun for me in the game was acting out a story in personal relationships with other people. I never had any interest in the fighting, power struggles, advancement, or mass events.

My biggest problem was that when I played, I couldn't stop thinking about the game all day long, and it seriously undermined the rest of my life, but even if I could resolve that problem, I would need to find a reason and a way to play, without ever finding any character with enough friendly interest in mine to spend more than a minute or two with him when their paths happen to cross, and some role to play in some story with others, that doesn't require us to be in the dream at the same time.

This might look like more complaining, but if I can talk about this with someone, it might help me get back in the game, if there’s any possibility for that. None of the rp that I saw in the last months that I played was the kind of rp that I was looking for, and which I found, when I first started playing. I don’t how to explain what I like, even to myself. Among other things, it includes evolving friendships between my character and others. More and more, I saw the mechanics and incentives in the game working against that kind of rp, for me.

From what I’ve seen in the forum and in the discord chat, if I play now, I’ll be facing the same challenges, but I have an idea how I might be able to have fun with it anyway. My reason for playing could be the entertainment it could possibly provide for others, if and when our paths cross.

If anyone remembers Farlong and would like to see him in the game again, send me a PM. That would give me another reason to play.

BAck to the drawing board.

The way I thought I could have fun won't work, with all the emphants everywhere.

I might have found a solution for that, and now I’ve found another reason to play the game: to help make the game more friendly for players who aren’t volunteering for PvP.

(edited to add the following)
To put it a different way, to help provide a more friendly environment for players who aren’t volunteering for PvP. Maybe even a guide, and volunteers to help those people learn how to have the most fun possible in this game.

There's a lovely Welcome Center now. Instead of entering the old Hall of Voices for the tutorial, dreamers can walk right into the Welcome Center. If being a guide is something you want for your character the opportunity is there. In fact, you would not be alone. There is quite an active selection of players, who take time out of their schedules and focus on helping new players.

As for PvP, players have options. PvP seems to be particularly rare these days. Mares are there for those who want combat and for those who don't want or cannot physically fight, there are other methods of gaining XP.

Tentacle, thank you. The way I’m thinking of it now is that sometimes the way some people play imposes conditions on others that spoil the fun for them. I’ll be trying to learn to help make the game more fun for those others, in spite of those conditions.
