Storms

Post by Butterfly »

My apologies to everyone that I keep storming on. It's either Underlight itself or my computer keeps dropping internet. Both have made it very difficult to get involved and accomplish things. If I storm on you, it's not personal ;)

I would recommend looking at your WIFI. Make sure you don't have any overlapping IP Addresses being assigned and your channels aren't being overrun. If your router and laptop wifi card suppport 5.0 Ghz, you should connect to that since it's usually faster and less populated. The only downside of 5.0 Ghz is a weaker range.

This may sound silly, but try the simple things too. Check connections. Sometimes when I clean house (yea, I do that about twice a year :P), the connections to the wifi box wiggle loose. Also, with some companies (i.e. Comcast), they will reset the incoming signal. If you're in a rainstorm-prone area, that may refresh the signal. Also if you're in a stormy area, you might consider a hardline instead, for a while. Check the internet company, they may be doing work or be having some problems on their end as well. Comcast is good about having a message about problems in your area.

Not terribly important but, by Wifi box I assume Lace meant Router, since most domestic networks don't have wireless APs

The biggest issue is the other person on the network and even our Netflix will be fine, but my connection will drop. Sadly, we rent so we have no control over the router or the service itself.

Do this to request your router to give you a new IP Address on your LAN:
  • Open a Command Prompt (Windows Logo then type 'cmd')
  • Type the following when it opens: ipconfig /release
That should clear up any potential collisions on your network without needing any sort of access to the router itself.
