A Gentle Reminder: Keeping the Magic of IC - In Character

Post by Koi-Cricket »

Hello fellow dreamers,

We hope this message finds you well. We've noticed that there has been a recent uptick in what we fondly refer to as "IC/OOC Crossover" or simply "Crossover." While we appreciate the enthusiasm and creativity that you all bring to the game, we wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of maintaining the distinction between in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) interactions.

First and foremost, we want to emphasize that this message is not intended as a reprimand or criticism. It is purely a reminder. We are immensely proud of the diverse community we have built together, and we recognize that everyone's dedication to the game is what makes it so special. Instead, we view this as an opportunity to reinforce the unique and immersive experience we all cherish.

So, what is IC/OOC Crossover, and why is it important to be mindful of it?

IC/OOC Crossover occurs when information obtained OOC is brought into the game and used IC. It can blur the lines between the game world and reality, making it harder for both new and veteran players to fully engage with the roleplaying experience.

Here are a few gentle reminders:
-Balance is Key: We understand that OOC discussions can sometimes lead to interesting IC ideas. However, it's essential to strike a balance. Remember that while you may be aware of certain details or events OOC, your character should not possess that knowledge unless they have learned it through in-game interactions.

-Respect the IC Environment: Keep in mind that other players may want to maintain a strict IC atmosphere. Always be respectful of their preferences, and try to match the tone of the roleplay around you. All OOC interactions are in whispers and in ((brackets). The welcome center is the only area in game in which OOC out loud should be used.

-Seek Consent: If you wish to involve another player's character in an IC plot or storyline that requires knowledge obtained OOC, it's courteous to seek their consent first. Open communication helps ensure that everyone enjoys the experience.

-Encourage Roleplay: The more we all immerse ourselves in our characters and the game world, the more rewarding the experience becomes. Use in-game interactions as the primary source of character development and information.

While we acknowledge the importance of all of these, there are specifics that should be noted as huge concerns:

1. Constantly complaining OOC about IC situations.

Conflict is a thing and meant for fun. Example: A house opens back up, and people don't like them IC- and coincidently OOC either. You may not like some of the players as a whole, so you use it as a platform to rip the house apart from the get go both IC and OOC. This is -not- roleplaying.

You don't like x,y,z that happens in game, so you bash it all OOC. I do understand that some things in game are just not for some people and you may not care for it much, and that is completely fine. The difference comes in when someone acts as their character OOC and continues to crossover and hate everything on an OOC level because they act as their character even after logging out of game.

Please remember that you are not your character. You get mad at someone in game, you don't have to hate them OOC. You get mad at someone OOC, you do not bring it in game and hate them IC. This is crossover and frowned upon. It ruins the entire gaming experience in which we have grown to love.

2. Complaining to GM's non-stop and digging for information to use IC.

I know that this community is fairly small and we have all formed a tight nit group, but you should never disrespect that fact and use it as a tool to put a GM in a predicament where you feed off them for information, use them as a sounding board for all your OOC banter. Let people enjoy the game as it stands and keep crossover at bay. Complain in game about IC situations.

There are many ways that you can convey your OOC issues. -in game cheat reports, email, or contacting a Koi account.

Please do not use a GM's player account to reach out to them regarding private things that GM's should not be sharing. This is abuse of friendship and completely disrespectful to put someone in that situation.

3. Do not whisper to people in game to OOC bash players.

We need players. We all know that Underlight is more fun playing with larger groups of people, than standing in thresh alone. Give everyone a chance to be a part of the community, both old players and new. We need them.

4. Do not bring OOC knowledge into the game.

If we post an announcement in Discord, your character shouldn't know the details. We want people to get involved and show up to things, so we post announcements to generate interest and advance knowledge so people can be available to log in. That doesn't mean you log in and immediately start talking about the announcement as if it was announced to your character in game.

In summary, our aim is to preserve the enchanting world we've built together and to make sure that every player, old and new, can continue to enjoy the game to its fullest. We trust in your commitment to maintaining the rich tapestry of our roleplaying universe.

Let's keep the magic alive, and together we'll create unforgettable stories in our immersive world. Thank you all for your dedication and passion!

Happy Dreaming :)
