Shadowman

Post by coltdorsey »

106 years after his older brother embarks on a quest only never to return, Thunderman searches for the truth in his brother's disappearance.

Thunderman enters the Keepers of Eternal Shadow threshold room. He takes a long draw of air into his lungs in preparation to leave sanctuary. As he enters Lower Umbric Planes, he recollects asking "Why are you so interested in the sewer water in Umbric?" Shadowman responded, "I'm not sure why exactly, but I feel drawn to find a way to purify it." He considers his brother's statement briefly before replying in a nasally, mocking voice that he's heard so many times before, "Purify the sewers, huh? This must be for a sphere quest!" Shadowman grinned at Thunderman before reminding him, "Fortunately for me, no one but you cares what I'm up to anyway."

Thunderman finds himself at Lothordolric's Cistern when his recollection is finished. He leans over the sewer water pool to greet his reflection, but is quickly reminded that his brother did not succeed in purifying the sewer water. As he moves up the small stairwell to the right, a flash of excitement plays on his face as he recalls an observation his brother made years ago: "Water is less likely to contaminate when it's in motion. Did you know there is an abundance of moving water in the sewer, but it's still contaminated?" A dash of guilt creeps over Thunderman as he recalls dismissing his brother's observation.

He moves through Lothordolric's cistern and into the Sewer Halls. He raises his right hand over his left, sending a fiery FlameShaft into two Emphants. Thunderman moves left at the fork, away from Upper Umbric Planes and enters The Reservoir Hall, where he begins searching the sewer for clues. He finds himself in front of a portal he has not seen before. He touches the frame of the portal with his left hand. "The Lost Sea", he says to himself. After drawing a deep breath, he moves into the Lost Sea.

After exploring the first few rooms he concludes silently, "This seems like a continuation of the sewers." After moving through only a few more rooms, Thunderman finds himself back in Lower Umbric Planes at the Lost Sea Portal. Feeling slightly defeated, he backtracks to the Reservoir. Looks around, considering his options for the next route. He decides on a portal, then enters the North Sewer.

Walking into the room, he observes two lesser nightmares charging him. He blinks a few times before blending into the background and watches them divide from their pursuit. He breathes in slowly, glassing the room and observes the emphant make its way through a low lit stone archway above the running sewer water. Thunderman steps down into the sewer water, wading against the moderate current toward the blackened space behind the stone archway. He moves about the dark space for a short time before turning and placing his left hand against the wall. "I wonder what Shadowman's notes on...", he began to think before a sudden interruption pulled him through the wall!

Thunderman recovers from a stumble, finding himself in a place equally lightless. A heavy burden slowly creeps from his chest and down his arms. "Brother, tell me you didn't succumb in this place..." he spoke softly to himself, as if he had already found the evidence. He begins to move forward toward any source of light while tracing his hand along the wall. As the room opens up, a few observes a few torches in the distance and an ominous looking portal.

He continues very cautiously toward the portal, turning in place every so often for good measure. After finally reaching the portal, he reluctantly activates it and sets his eyes upon four empty thrones. A sinking feeling sets into his chest. He follows the stairwell off to the right side wall and moves closer to the empty throne. Passing in front of each throne, right to left, he can't help but believe his brother did not just lose his way. After passing in front of the last throne, he turns away and observes a glint of light from a portal off in the distance. He follows the wall across the room to the portal and touches the frame. "Ascheron's Chambers", he senses before repeating the name "Ascheron." "Is this the name responsible for your disappearance?", he asks himself before entering the chamber room. The room is small, but still not well lit despite four light sources. "It's almost like this place choses to darkness.", he concludes as the feeling in his chest becomes heavier.

After exploring the plane and finding evidence of dreamers but not his brother, he makes his way back to where he entered. "Well, this is where I entered. But there is no portal here to leave." Thunderman grumbles considering his Return had expired only a few minutes ago. He follows the hallway back into the Broken Vestibule. A light source off to his left catches his eye, leading him to a hallway that he had missed before. "The Inky Black" is revealed to him as he touches the frame of the portal before entering.

After exploring the Inky Black, he determines there are five paths off the main section of the room, oddly all leading to the Black Burrow. Despite the same room name, each room leads out of the Lightless Hollow into one of the following planes: Lower Umbric, Chasm of Souls, Evernight Plateau, Threshold Caves and Ossuary of Dread. Thunderman writes down these observations in his notes, while back in the Inky Black. After feeling like he's investigated this area thoroughly, he looks back for the first time to the portal he entered. Like a head on a spike, he sees his brother's essence mounted on top of the portal frame next to a female essence. Thunderman clenches both fists and shouts into the darkness, "Ascheron!"
