Of Ashri the Fire Spirit

Post by Emet »

There once was a firespirit named Ashri. He dwelt in a plane of eternal flames, in a City of Dreams far from the one we know. Ashri had a problem. He loved to dwell upon the wind, and travel with it. The concept of wind was fascinating, motion without visible substance!

Ashri wanted his own wind to follow him wherever he went. So he went to find someone to help. He went first to the Fire Shamans, old men and women of great understanding. He asked them how could travel the winds, and make his own wind to sail upon!

The Fire Shamans spoke amongst themselves for a few minutes. Then their junior member -- a man of only sixty-six years, was sent forward to give Ashri their answer. “You are not a windspirit, Ashri,” the young-old man told him. “Be true to yourself. You are for fire, for flickering and burning! Not sailing on the winds!”

Ashri scorched with anger, and left at once. He wouldn’t take the words of foolish old people -- let alone their most junior member! After his rage subsided, Ashri smoldered among the firefolk for a few days. They didn’t understand his problem, but he kept it to himself. He wanted time to think.

The Volcano! Surely it would have some answers for him! Ashri raced off to meet the Volcano, for he reasoned, if the Volcano could combine fire and earth, surely it could tell him how to combine fire and wind!

The Volcano huffed and puffed great spouts of molten earth as Ashri approached. “Great Volcano!” he said, “Can you tell me the secret of combining fire with other elements?” The Volcano grumbled, and rumbled, its deep voice resonating deeply. “Come closer…”

Ashri watched the great being with trepidation, but he was a firespirit! He need fear no fire! He approached closer still, and asked again! “Great Volcano! Can you tell me the secret of combining fire with other elements?” The Volcano roared, and poured, deep voice sounding out aloud again, “Closer still…”

Ashri burnt his way up the mountainside, till he flickered atop the very edge of the caldera. And he called out again! “Great Volcano! Can you tell me the secret of combining fire with other elements?” The Volcano croaked, and spoke in the softest whisper. As Ashri leaned forward to listen -- Ashri, the little spirit of fire, stormed.
